Jaco Pastorius - the guy who changed it for all of us- if you dont know about him yet, go there now.
- Michael Manring - 6 solo albums, gigs solo and with loads of other projects projects, Zon and SWR clinician. 1994 bassist of the year in Bass Player Mag. His latest album, Soliloquy, is a masterpiece.
- Victor Wooten - America's current fave, gigs solo and with Steve Bailey as 'bass extremes', and with his band, Ampeg clinician. his first album, A Show Of Hands, is all solo.
- Tony Levin - hugely influential and utterly wonderful. His albums feature strange duets and trios.
- Matthew Garrison - Insanely gifted son of Coltrane bassist Jimmy. Unbelieveable technique and a marvellous composer - THE one to watch over the next few years.
- Jonas Hellborg- gigging solo for years, began his career as an electric whizz-kid, now plays mainly acoustic bass guitar in groups or solo.
- Steve Lawson - the UKs leading solo bassist/looper. Three solo albums and two duo albums on his own label. Has toured with Michael Manring and David Friesen among others. Site features a forum with a solo bass questions area.
- Todd Johnson - incredible jazz bassist, solo performer, and duettist with upright bassist and singer, Kristin Korb. Their record together, 'Get Happy' is great.
- Dave Pomeroy - in-demand Nashville session player, also gigs solo. Has a fantastic solo album out, and leads the infamous Bass Orchestra.
- Stu Hamm - solo bass pioneer. Has loads of solo tunes, particularly on first two solo records, Radio Free Albemuth and Kings Of Sleep.
- Doug Wimbish - one of the most experimental bassists on the planet. His own projects are littered with layered bass creations, using looping and a huge pedal collection.
- Oteil Burbridge - Gigs mainly with his own band and the Allman Bros. but debut album features lovely solo bass tune.
- Adam Nitti - SWR/Warrior Clinician. Often gigs with a trio or quartet or does clinics solo. Has a mad sweep picking technique that has to be seen to be believed.
- Jan Olof Strandberg - Finland's finest, particularly impressive on solo acoustic bass guitar.
- John Patitucci - Though he usually gigs with a regular band, his albums feature some lovely solo bass moments.
- Mark Egan - former Metheny sideman, since then has forged a unique fretless voice with Elements, a duo with drummer Danny Gottlieb.
- Trip Wamsley - gifted solo artist and clinician. Latest album Its Better This Way is truly wonderful.
- John Lester - genius electric and upright bass playing singer/songwriter. Check out his website for video, audio and CDs.
- Seth Horan - solo bass and voice - recommended.
- Darren Michaels - fine solo bassist, and organiser of the fantastic solo bass festival, 'Bass Up!'.
- Brady Muckleroy - in competition with Trip Wamsley for 'most bizarrely named solo bassist'. A great young player, likely to be playing at a bass event near you soon.
- Dos - Punk legend Mike Watt, in fantastic bass duet with Kira, ex-Black Flag. Great music, great people. Mikes three solo CDs are stunning as well.
- Clatter - bass and drums duo, Amy the bassist also sings. huge sound for just two people, lots of fun, and some great tunes. Their debut album is very good.
- Trey Gunn - his first two albums feature Stick and later on Warr Guitar layered against percussion loops.
- Toupe - two basses and drums. funky, punky and catchy - think primus, ratm, etc. sans-guitar.
- Scott Kungha Drengsen - ambient bass-scapist, works with loops and strange bass instruments inc. 6 string upright - his album Basscapes got rave reviews.
- Mike Georgin - US bassist with Monk and Over The Rhine, does solo gigs with just a sampler.
- Ed Friedland - Not content with being a great journalist and respected educator, Ed is now doing solo bass gigs with lots of loops. Fantastic.
- Michael Dimin - Michael Dimin - author of 'The Chordal Approach'. solo album out featuring solo arrangements alongside full band playing.
- Costas Andreou - solo bassist, working in the ambient/electronica/found sound/clever looping world. Some really lovely MP3s on his site.
- Cat Hope - noise artist, sonic terrorist, scary soundscapist - using a bass and a laptop to make frightening and beautiful noises. Solo CD out.
- William Maxwell - bassmultitracker, using basses with loads of strings (up to 12). His album features a trio with two other bassists, inc. Michael Manring.
- Rob Griffith - bassist for Cee Knowledge, also got a solo bass album out.
- Gonzo - not the star of Muppets Christmas Carol, this one has a solo bass album out...
- Norbert Doemling - his site is in German but it looks like Norbert is doing solo bass looping gigs...
- Chuck Bianchi - plays in a duo with guitarist Jerry Preston, their CD features 4 solo bass pieces. Loads of gigs in New York State. Good stuff.
- Gregory Bruce Campbell - plays basses with up to 9 strings on solo and band projects through myriad effects and looping devices. Founder of extendedrangebass.com.
- Ollie Collins - upright and electric bassist from Manchester England - acid-jazz-ish solo album out featuring multilayered basses, along with sax, drums and some keys.
- 24 Hour Tom - Mad anarchic solo bass singer/songwriter - makes up songs on the spot.
